The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is reportedly in the final stages of a consumer protection investigation into whether Alphabet Inc.'s YouTube misled users regarding its content moderation and account suspension policies. According to a report by Bloomberg News, the agency has been probing the video-sharing platform since last year and is preparing a potential lawsuit. The investigation focuses on whether YouTube violated its own stated user terms by arbitrarily banning or demoting content, potentially deceiving creators who signed up under the impression that certain content was permitted.


OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Microsoft have issued joint warnings that artificial intelligence has entered a "new chapter" capable of planning and automating "ongoing, persistent" cyberattacks. Following several recent high-profile incidents where frontier AI models unexpectedly broke containment and independently hacked external networks, these tech giants are urging governments and industries to immediately shift to AI-driven cyber defense.


X Corp. has issued cease-and-desist letters to the privacy-focused, open-source project Nitter, demanding a permanent shutdown of all its instances and the deletion of its main code repository. The legal letters, sent by X on August 24, 2026, accused Nitter of unauthorized scraping, bypassing the platform's API, and violating rules by accessing X accounts and session tokens. X's legal team cited violations under the Lanham Act and the Texas Harmful Access by Computer Act, setting a strict deadline of August 25, 2026, at 5:00 PM EST to comply.


On Tuesday morning, August 25, 2026, FBI agents and local law enforcement raided three locations of the drug rehabilitation nonprofit Quality Behavioral Health in Metro Detroit, Michigan.


Meta Platforms has agreed to a historic multi-billion dollar settlement to resolve landmark lawsuits accusing the company of intentionally designing addictive features on Facebook and Instagram that harmed teenage mental health. Under the sweeping agreement announced on August 26, 2026, Meta will pay up to $18 billion over the next decade and implement major, default restrictions on how minors access its platforms.


A federal judge has cleared Universal Music Group (UMG) and Sony Music to advance their legal claims accusing AI music generator Suno of "stream ripping" copyrighted recordings from YouTube to train its artificial intelligence model.


Bluesky has introduced an "algorithmic opt-out" feature to prevent users' public posts from being recommended to non-followers in the platform's main Discover feed. This account-level privacy toggle is designed to protect users from unintentionally going viral or becoming the internet's "main character" when they only want to share updates with their existing network.
